NFL Domestic Violence Iniative Is Increasing Public Awareness

Since the NFL began it’s current public service announcement reagarding Domestic Violence, there has been a noticable increase in domestic violence prosecution nationwide. Cases that may have been plea bargained down from a felony to a misdemeanor or a simple battery offense are now being prosecuted as a felony domestic violence offense.

Health Maintenance Organizations in California are now having their professional staff trained in domestic violence batterers’ intervention facilitator certification. In addition, the California Department of Rehabilitation has now approved Batterers’ Intervention Facilitation as an approved course for rehabilitation clients who are being retrained for jobs in domestic violence counseling.

The Arizona State Supreme Court is now carefully monitoring batterers’ intervention programs in Arizona in order to assure that providers are certified to provide course content to teach equality in intimate relationships.

An Open Letter To The Milwaukee Wisconsin School District Board

This was the headline in your local Journal Sentinel yesterday: Wisconsin black suspension rate highest in U.S. for high schools.

Rather than suspend out-of-school, what can be done to send a clear message that the behavior is unacceptable?

Many school districts in Los Angeles, Sacramento and Merced, CA. are offering anger management classes and coaching in lieu of suspension. In addition, a number of smaller school districts in Texas and New York are using anger management in lieu of suspension for aggressive behavior at school. Students are seen individually, or in small groups as well as semester long classes. These programs all use an Emotional Intelligence Curricula including a Pre and Post Assessment for “impulse control”/anger management as well as other key Emotional Intelligence skills. The success or lack success of the intervention is readily available for each student based on his or her results on the Post EI Assessment.

The Milwaukee School District can and should join progressive School Districts that are successfully using an intervention that actually works.
